Our Student Council has an influential and important voice in the development of our school.

Students from all year groups are represented on the parliament which is led by our Sixth Form Senior Student Team. The Council meet on a half-termly basis. Council members also get to attend monthly ‘Headteacher’s Question Time’ – an opportunity to ask the Head about any issues affecting students in the school.

In recent years the Student Council has been involved in shaping our school’s behaviour system, redesigning our new toilet facilities, making decisions about the use of monies raised from fundraising activities, launching a campaign against littering and contributing to a review of home learning at Thomas Alleyne’s.

The student body get to have a ‘voice’ regarding key matters in school such as:

  • Teaching and Learning

  • Health and Safety

  • External fundraising events within the community

  • Youth Conferences

  • Sixth Form

  • Anti-bullying

  • Academic mentoring

Representatives of the Student Council take turns in attending Governing Body meetings to represent the student voice. More recently they have also been requested to participate in the student panel interviews for new staff appointments and present their research for introducing tailored shorts for the Summer term.

They are a very important and integral group of young people who are passionate about learning, their school and their community.

Student Council Meetings and Parent Forum

For this half-term's student council and parent forum meetings, we have been focusing on gathering ideas and viewpoints about our students' learning experience during their lessons.  We spent a form time last week sharing details about the continuous staff training all teachers engage with as part of our professional development to ensure our students are able to make the best progress possible, which included information about the main areas for development we have been working on this year.  This was followed by some discussion prompts about the impact these strategies have during lessons, as well as gathering feedback about the various techniques teachers use to support our students' learning.

Each form representative then met with our Year 12 senior prefects to share the main points covered on behalf of their tutor group, which they then fed-back to our senior leadership team.  We ran a similar session during our parent forum meeting earlier this week and we will now be able to take key points shared by both students and parents into account as we plan our teacher training needs over the next few months.
